Why use the Avalon Barrier?

The Avalon Barrier is a very popular plastic barrier manufactured by Oxford Plastics, designed for most pedestrian safety applications such as:

  • Surrounding a working area.
  • Preventing access to construction projects.
  • Displaying signs around construction sites.

Several unique design features of the Avalon include:

  • Interlocking grooves allowing them to be stacked easily without sliding apart.
  • The interlocking method requires no extra bits – no parts to fall off or lose.
  • Replaceable feet.
  • Areas provided for signs and stickers.
  • Single piece blow moulded construction.

How is the barrier made?

The barrier is made from using a technique called blow moulding. This involves heating plastic pellets and injecting them into a steel mould, at which point air is injected into the centre. This forces the plastic to take the shape of the mould without being completely solid. The plastic used to make the Avalon barrier is UV resistant High-Density Polyethylene. This Plastic is ideal for use in the Avalon barrier because:

  • It will not degrade by being left in the sun.
  • It has a high strength to weight ratio.
  • It is resistant to most acids and bases.
  • It can easily be recycled.

The shape and material used to make the barrier allows it to be both very rigid, resistant to abuse while still being light enough for easy transport. Finally, after this process is finished, a Chapter 8 compliant retro-reflective sticker is added to the barrier, that adds to the high visibility design.

Clearpath Extra vs Clearpath vs Standard Avalon: What’s the difference?

The Avalon barrier is available with two three different feet types:

  • Standard Avalon Feet: A one piece construction foot for general purpose use, it measures 620mm in length for maximum stability.
  • Clearpath Feet: This is designed specifically for use alongside pedestrian walkways, so that less room is occupied on the pedestrian side. This foot type is made from three parts. A heavy-weight inner core made from recycled PVC and a two part outer shell made from High-Density Polyethylene. Because of the more complicated design, this is usually sold at a premium.
  • Clearpath Extra Feet (Version 2): New for 2015, this is the next generation of feet for the Avalon Barrier. It has non-trip design on both sides of the foot, achieved by using a rigid GRP moulded rod running throughout.

Sometimes people call the Avalon Barrier the Clearpath Barrier when fitted with the Clearpath feet.

Accessories for the Avalon Barrier

There are a number of accessories, commonly used on pedestrian barriers that are also available for the Avalon barrier

  • Avalon Barrier Link Boards: This is a extruded PVC white board with chapter 8 compliant retro-reflective stickers on that attaches between two runs of Avalon Barriers. Easily removed by simply lifting up – useful when needing an easily accessible point.
  • Avalon Locking Clamp: If two barriers need to have additional anti-tamper protection added this is the solution
  • Avalon Lamp Bracket: Used to attach lamps on to the ends of barriers.

Sizes Available in the Avalon Barrier

The Avalon barrier has three sizes available. 2 metres, 1 metres and 0.5 metres. Most applications are catered for with the 2 metre barrier and 1 metre barrier though; 95% of Avalon barrier sales consisting of 2 metre barriers. The drawing below shows the profiles of all three sizes of the barrier.

Customisation of the Avalon Barrier

There are three main types of customisation available:

  • Colour – The main colour of the barrier can be manufactured to any RAL code, Pantone colour or almost any other colour available – Standard colours are Orange, Blue, Yellow and White.
  • Embossing – There is an area of 470 x 80mm on the barrier that can be used for allowing your logo, name, web address or other custom design. The embossing offers up your design as a raised area in the plastic that cannot be removed.
  • Stickers – There is a large area (550 x 100mm). We only recommend the use of 95mm of the height so that the sticker does not have to be perfectly aligned.

Moving and Storing the Avalon Barrier

The Avalon barrier is designed to stack on a standard double pallet. Up to 50 can be stored on a double pallet. This brings the total weight to around 500kg, which means it can be used with standard pallet trucks and tail lifts. You can see the scale of a pallet of Avalon barriers in the picture below showing them loaded on to two types of van.   A image showing what Avalon barriers look like loaded on to vans   The specific dimensions of each Avalon Barrier can be seen below. Where can I buy the Avalon Barrier?

There are a number of retailers that sell the Avalon barrier on the Internet. One of these is Start Safety UK, which are an authorised distributor for Oxford Plastics and hold stock of all four colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the feet replacable?
Yes. Each foot is connected using a spigot to the main body of the barrier. You can see a video of how to replace the feet on our video page.

Are the Clearpath Extra feet really strong enough?Yes. These have been carefully designed with a ultra-rigid GRP insert through the base of the foot. This means they offer the same level of performance as a standard Avalon foot, with non of the bulk.

Does the Avalon Barrier work with other barrier systems?
Many of them, yes. Known compatible barrier systems such as the Melba gate barrier can work with them. Alternatively, barrier tape or jumbo tie wraps can be used to secure two different types together.

Do the feet always come as standard with the barrier?
Yes, Avalon barriers are never sold or shipped without feet. The banding used to hold them on to a pallet is usually placed around the feet.

How strong is the Avalon Barrier and is it brittle?
We believe that the Avalon Barrier is the strongest barrier on the market. Part of this is the ribbed, blow moulded design – it is incredibly rigid while maintaining a reasonable weight. Secondly, the plastic used is a high performance, high-density polyethylene that has been UV Stabilised. This means it will not crack easily and will bend instead of break, even after being left in direct sunlight all year round.

Won’t the barrier get blown over?
A single Avalon barrier will withstand up to 17mph of wind, head-on, before it will fall over. It is not really designed to be used on its own, but when multiple barriers are combined this figure increases dramatically.

What colours are available?
The standard colours that are available are – Orange, Blue, White and Yellow. Almost any other colour can be manufactured if you can provide a Pantone shade or RAL colour.  The minimum quantity for this service is usually 200 barriers.

Can you swap the standard feet for non-trip / Clearpath feet yourself?

Yes – All feet types for the Avalon Barrier connect using the same spigot. This standardised spigot means that all feet types can be interchanged if necessary or if damaged.
